It helps you in the decision making process. You learn how to research stocks and make investment decisions based on that research. Instead of making random bets on what stock will go up, you develop the ability to pick stocks which are likely to go up. You’ll be wrong sometimes, but you can learn from your mistakes without risking real money.

Simulators are not a perfect tool. They typically provide a delay in execution rather than real time trading. (A 20 minute delay is common.) And they do not have all of the order possibilities that a good broker will offer.

What a simulator does not do is prepare you to deal with the emotion of trading. When you put your own money at risk emotions become a huge factor in your success. But they are easier to control if you have confidence in what you are doing.
